Wild Parrots of San Francisco's Sue Bierman Park

Home of beautiful wild parrots, San Francisco's been enjoying the sights and sounds of these rare birds that can be spotted around town, especially in green areas. But, how do these feathered friends end up in SF? Keep on reading to find out.

From South America to San Francisco

Cherry-headed conures are commonly kept as pets in the U.S. According to a local San Francisco legend, two parrots escaped from their owners in the early 1990s and started to live in the wild. They soon met other escapees and created a flock in the parks of San Francisco. Just 10 years later, that flock numbered well over 100, and today you’ll still see large flocks of these birds in the park, on Telegraph Hill, and flying over the city in flocks.

Also known as red-masked parakeets, these non-native tropical parrots live freely in San Francisco. The species originates from South America; members are commonly found in the tropical jungle regions of southwest Ecuador and northwest Peru, but they can sometimes be spotted in semiarid regions or even urban areas. They're beautiful birds with dark green plumage and a red face and head. You’ll also notice that the parrots have a flash of red on their wings, a white ring surrounding their eyes, and gray beaks and feet.

If you want to view the parrots up close, head to Sue Bierman Park as a large flock of parrots flies from Telegraph Hill to roost in its palm trees. You can spot them near the Embarcadero, often joined by a large congregation of tourists. You’ll also probably hear these parrots before you spot them, as they are very noisy. While these birds are fun to watch, it's best not to feed them. They can find their own food sources, and the wrong kinds of snacks can harm or even kill them.
